Digital Desk: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has raised concerns that the copies of the Constitution provided to lawmakers on the opening day of the new Parliament building do not include the words "secular" and "socialist" in its Preamble. Speaking to news agency ANI on Tuesday, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha expressed his worry over the omission.
"The Constitution with which we walked into the new Parliament building today did not have the words 'secular' and 'socialist' in its preamble. If these two words are not present in the Constitution, then it is a worrying matter," said Chowdhury. He further accused the government of making this change "cleverly" and raised concerns about their intentions.
Chowdhury expressed his desire to raise the issue in Parliament but claimed he did not get the opportunity to do so.
Earlier on Tuesday, Chowdhury was observed reading the Preamble of the Constitution within the Parliament, pointedly emphasizing the missing words "socialist" and "secular."
Sonia Gandhi, the Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson, also noted the absence of these words in the preamble.
On the opening day of the new Parliament building, Members of Parliament received a copy of the Constitution of India, along with books related to Parliament, a commemorative coin, and a stamp as part of a gift bag presented to MPs.
The new Parliament complex was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28, and the second day of the special Parliament session took place within its walls.
Additionally, the shift to the new Parliament building brought about changes in the uniforms of Parliament staff from both Houses, including chamber attendants, officers, security personnel, drivers, and marshals, who will now be seen wearing new uniforms during the special session.
