Digital Desk: A farmer in Maharashtra's Pune region who grew tomatoes has his fortune turned by becoming rich amid rising tomato prices across the nation. Only selling 13,000 tomato crates in a month brought in more than Rs 1.5 crore for Tukaram Bhagoji Gayakar and his family.

With the assistance of his son Ishwar Gayakar and daughter-in-law Sonali, Tukaram cultivates tomatoes on 12 acres of his 18 acres of agricultural property. According to the family, they produce high-quality tomatoes and their understanding of fertilisers and pesticides enables them to protect their crop from pests.

Selling one tomato crate in Narayanganj brought in Rs 2,100 for the farmer in a single day. Gayakar made Rs 18 lakh on Friday after selling a total of 900 cartons.

He was able to sell tomato crates last month for anything between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,400 each crate, depending on quality. In Junnar, a city in the Pune area, several farmers who are now growing tomatoes have achieved millionaire status.

By selling tomatoes, the committee generated revenue of Rs 80 crore in a single month and employed more than 100 women in the neighbourhood.

Tukaram's daughter-in-law Sonali manages the planting, harvesting, and packaging part, while his son Ishwar handles sales, management, and financial planning. The three months of hard effort have paid off handsomely, as they have experienced favourable market circumstances.

The highest selling price of tomatoes for crates of good quality (20 kilogrammes) at the Jhunnu Agricultural Produce Market Committee's market in Narayanganj was Rs 2,500, which is Rs 125 per kilogramme.

Farmers becoming millionaires through the sale of tomatoes is not limited to Maharashtra. A farmer family from Karnataka's Kolar sold 2,000 crates of tomatoes this week and returned home with Rs 38 lakh.
