Digital Desk: Elections for the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) have been postponed yet again because disqualified state bodies and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) could not agree on a new date.
On Wednesday, the IOA held a meeting to discuss the requests of five state entities that had been disqualified by WFI in 2022, including the president and general secretary. The voting, which was originally scheduled for July 6th, will now take place on July 11th.
According to IOA sources, the conference was inconclusive and the representatives of the state bodies that were disqualified from participation were unhappy. The five WFI bodies that have been disqualified are Maharashtra, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, and Rajasthan.
A new hearing date has been set for state WFI entities that have been disqualified. However, the voter list for the WFI election cannot be finalised unless the disqualification is not overturned.
According to a notice sent out by the returning officer, the WFI previously declared that the elections would happen on July 6. Mahesh Mittal Kumar, a retired judge from the high court, was chosen by the IOA to serve as the returning officer.
The electoral college has until June 19 to receive two nominations from each state and union territory. By June 22, all nominations will have been reviewed. Each state unit may send up to two representatives, each of whom will be allowed one vote. This indicates that there will be 50 votes total in the WFI electoral college. But other state organisations that the WFI had previously disbanded have also said they want to take part in the elections.
The returning officer will review each representative's credentials to determine whether they are qualified to cast a ballot. Nominations can be made starting on June 23 and must be received by June 25.
The nomination papers will be prepared and shown before being scrutinised on June 28. Candidates will have the choice between June 28 and July 1 to withdraw their nominations. On July 2, the final candidate list will be made public.
There will be elections for the president, senior vice-president, four vice presidents, secretary-general, treasurer, two joint secretaries, and five executive members of the WFI.
