A month after Prime Minister Narendra Modi requested that a million jobs
be given in the central government in mission mode for the following 18 months,
the government informed Parliament on Wednesday that there are nearly a million
openings in central ministries and departments.

    Only
30.55 lakh people were employed by the central government's ministries and
departments as of March 1, 2021, according to the government's written response
submitted to Parliament. This suggests that out of the 40.35 lakh sanctioned
positions, nearly 9.8 lakh were unfilled.

when 36.3 lakh sanctioned positions were available and 32.2 lakh government
workers were employed as of March 1. This demonstrates that although the number
of government-sanctioned positions has increased by almost 11% over the past
five years, the actual number of employees has decreased by more than 5%.

    On
June 14, Prime Minister Modi declared that in the upcoming 18 months, 10 lakh
people would receive jobs in the federal government. The announcement was timed
to coincide with the Opposition's recent discussion of the nation's
unemployment rate. The PMO tweeted, "PM reviewed the status of human
resources in all departments and ministries and instructed that recruitment of
10 lakh people be done by the government in mission mode in the next 1.5
    years."

The Ministry of Railways, the Defense (Civilian) Department,
the Home Ministry, the Department of Posts, and the Department of Revenue all
have more than 4,000 open positions each, according to the most recent
government data provided to Parliament on Wednesday. The Department of Revenue
    has almost 80,000 open positions.
