Anand Sharma resigns from Himachal Congress post after Kashmir Party revolt
In April, Anand Sharma was named chairman of the Congress' Himachal Pradesh unit's "steering committee."

Digital Desk: Anand Sharma, a senior Congress leader, announced his resignation as head of the party's Himachal Pradesh unit's "steering committee" on Sunday, following a similar move by the party's Jammu and Kashmir branch, led by veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad.

In a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Mr. Sharma stated that his self-respect is "non-negotiable," and he has resigned from the office, according to reports.

Mr. Azad, another member of the "G-23" group of dissidents, resigned as chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir campaign committee a few days ago.

Mr Sharma has informed Congress President Rahul Gandhi that he has been overlooked during the dialogue process. He did, however, tell Ms Gandhi that he would continue to campaign for the party's candidates in the state.

On April 26, the former union minister and Congress deputy leader in Rajya Sabha were chosen as head of the Himachal Pradesh Steering Committee.

Mr Azad and Mr Sharma are both major leaders of the G-23 grouping, which has been critical of the party leadership's actions and has advocated for a fundamental overhaul to resuscitate the party's declining fortunes.

The group, which includes renowned veterans such as Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Manish Tewari, has been demanding on legitimate elections up to the Congress Working Committee, the party's top decision-making body.

Mr Sharma considered one of the party's tallest leaders from Himachal Pradesh, allegedly informed the Congress president in his letter that his self-esteem has been harmed because he has not been contacted or invited to any of the party's meetings.

Congress aspires to dethrone the BJP in Himachal Pradesh in the next assembly elections.

Mr Sharma first ran for assembly in 1982 and was handed a Rajya Sabha ticket by then-prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1984. He has been a Rajya Sabha member ever since and has held various critical positions within the party.
