This 45-day festival, which began today, is expected to attract millions of pilgrims seeking spiritual purification...
The "Bharat Jodo Yatra" starts on September 7 from Kanyakumari and will travel 3,570 kilometres via 12 states.
Digital Desk: The Congress's Bharat Jodo Yatra, which begins on Wednesday, will see 119 Bharat Yatris, including former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, will stay on the road, cook food at campsites, and have access to laundry once every three days for the next 150 days as their yatra (foot march) crisscrosses through 12 states, covering over 3,570 kilometres from Kanyakumari to Kashmir.
The travellers will sleep in 59 truck-mounted containers. Except for Mr. Gandhi, who will have his own container due to his security detail, the other yatris will have to bed together. The majority of these containers can sleep 12 people.
"The majority of yatris have already gathered in Kanyakumari at the starting location. Age is not a consideration. Even if I had been 98 years old, I would have joined the mission that our leader Rahul Gandhi is undertaking. And in any case, I have already warned my younger travelling companions that I will surpass them," Mr. Mahlawat remarked.
Mr. Mahlawat has been a member of the party for thirty years, whereas Mr. Bai from Itanagar has only been a member for three.
Mr. Bai acknowledges that the journey's magnitude and grandeur are intimidating, and his family wasn't very enthusiastic about him going. "My main reason for participating in the yatra is to draw attention to the predicament of several young people like myself who are having difficulty finding jobs. Our prime years are being eaten up by this major issue," Mr. Bai added.
Security personnel, the party's communication team, which includes photographers, social media staff, and a medical team, will travel with the yatra in addition to the 119 core yatris, bringing the total number of travellers to 300.
The yatris will only have access to washing once every three days when they are anticipated to arrive in the cities and have been instructed to wear white to ensure consistency.
The yatra is anticipated to traverse an average of 22–23 kilometres each day, with walking taking place in the morning from 7–10 am and again from 3.30–7 pm after a break. The containers will not accompany the yatra; rather, they will meet at the specified campground after each day.
On Wednesday at 3 p.m., Rahul Gandhi will arrive at Kanyakumari following an hour-long prayer gathering in Siriperumbudur. Mr. Gandhi will visit the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, the Thiruvalluvar Statue, and the Kamaraj Memorial at Kanyakumari before the start of the yatra.
He will then go to Mahatma Gandhi Mandap, where the tricolour will be presented to him by the chief ministers of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan, and Bhupesh Baghel of Chhattisgarh. The voyage itself will start on Thursday. Therefore, the yatris will prepare their breakfast and lunch on-site while the State Congress units are expected to organise food for them when they take a break in the afternoon.
On September 11, the Padayatra will arrive in Kerala and travel through the state for the following 18 days before making its way to Karnataka on September 30.
If the Congress holds a presidential election on October 17, all Yatris would be permitted to vote at the Bengaluru Congress headquarters.
