Digital Desk:Yuvraj Singh’s NGO, YouWeCan recently advertised the ‘Your Health is in Your Hands’ theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and showed oranges to symbolize
the breasts. Some of the messages have drawn controversy for being masks with positive intentions and have drawn backlash and demands to take down the ads.
YouWeCan Foundation is in the news for an unfortunately worded awareness message that was painted on the walls inside a Delhi Metro coach. The breast cancer awareness by the non-profit organization, which is run by the cricketer Yuvraj Singh, has recently launched a series of advertisements where women sit on buses with baskets of fruit. The sensationalist caption read, “Examine your oranges monthly.”.
One user posted on her ‘How will a country successfully create awareness of breast cancer when we can’t even refer to them as breasts? I photographed that at Delhi Metro, and I was like What on earth? Check your oranges? Who designs these campaigns, and who signs them off? It’s funny that people are paying their taxes and these idiots are presenting this poster to the public. I saw a post where someone shares the images’.
The message on X has since gone viral, with many people spitting anger at the foundation and Delhi metro for accepting such messages. Still, some users wrote comments tagging the cricketer and asking him to take down the campaign, and other users demanded Delhi Metro dismantle the advertisement. Some of the others wanted to thank the foundation for trying to bring ‘real change’ on the grassroots level.
Initially , YouWeCan had already initiated the “Your health is in your hands" promotion in the beginning of October, during the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This advertisement campaign – ‘Your Health is in Your Hands,’ personifies oranges in relation to breasts as a sure sign that women have their health in their hands, literally.
