Central Government: Adding 40 crore more people to Ayushman Bharat for a low premium

AB-PMJAY currently has a membership of over 50 crore people (Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana).

Digital Desk: Ayushman Bharat Yojana is expected to cover 40 crores more people who are not covered by any government or private insurance scheme. Although the scheme offers free health insurance of Rs 5 lakh to prime beneficiaries, students and others who cannot afford regular health insurance will be able to purchase it at an affordable rate.

Because of the coverage gaps in PMJAY, more than 30 percent of the population currently lacks health insurance coverage. The government intends to reduce health insurance premiums by more than a third of the retail price with this extension, making it more affordable for such people.

Furthermore, the National Health Authority (NHA), which governs AB-PMJAY, intends to launch a pilot project in selected states in the coming months. Later, coverage will be expanded throughout India.

Beneficiaries of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana have unlimited access to all premium health care facilities in the government and private sectors. In addition, under this scheme, people will be able to receive treatment in the private wards of government hospitals.

While over 50 crore people (10.74 crore families) are already covered by the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), which provides free annual health insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh to every family, the government now plans to extend this coverage for a small premium to those who cannot afford health insurance at retail price.

According to an official, the plan is to reduce the insurance premium by more than one-third of the retail price and make it affordable for those who do not currently have any financial protection for health.

The Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme and state government extension schemes cover the bottom 51 percent of the population - approximately 69 crore people - with comprehensive hospitalization coverage.

Furthermore, approximately 19% of the population - 25 crore people - are covered by social health insurance and private voluntary health insurance. The remaining 30% of the population does not have health insurance. In fact, due to existing coverage gaps in PMJAY and overlap between schemes, the actual uninsured population is likely to be higher.

Despite their ability to pay, they remain uninsured without low-cost health insurance.
