Digital Desk: Chief Justice of India UU Lalit on Tuesday named Justice D Y Chandrachud as his successor.

According to the procedure, the leaving CJI picks the senior-most judge as his/her successor before resigning from office, after the Union Minister of Law and Justice seeks the recommendation. CJI Lalit will retire on November 8.

Justice D Y Chandrachud, the Supreme Court's senior-most judge after the Chief Justice, will serve for two years until November 10, 2024.

After the process, once a new CJI is designated, the Collegium headed by the outgoing CJI also freezes.

Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, also known as D Y Chandrachud, was a former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and a judge at the Mumbai High Court. Currently serving as the executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority, he is the son of the longest-serving Chief Justice, Y. V. Chandrachud.

Ahead of the promotion, Chandrachud is also facing allegations of "misusing of office." The Bombay Bar Association (BBA), the oldest association of lawyers practicing in the Bombay High Court, approved a resolution on Monday recommending that the complaint by one Rashid Khan Pathan, who made the accusation, be dismissed.
