The liquor policy scam, which involved massive financial irregularities in its formulation, led to the arrests of top AAP leaders.
Digital Desk: The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) uncovered major financial irregularities in the Delhi liquor policy when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was in power through a recent report. The audit spans from 2017-18 to 2020-21 and the Delhi Assembly received it under the current Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's presentation. The presentation of the audit report resulted in AAP MLAs getting suspended from the ongoing session.
The CAG report shows that the Delhi government suffered a total revenue deficit of ₹2,002 crore because of inadequate policy management and improper implementation of the liquor policy. The government incurred ₹890 crore in losses because it did not re-tender surrendered licenses and the zonal licensees received exemptions and delays in enforcement which caused another ₹941 crore loss.
The scandal has led to several high-level arrests including AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh together with ex-Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain. These arrests were made on charges of corruption and irregularities related to the policy’s formulation and execution.
During the current Assembly session the BJP administration of Delhi has declared its commitment to present all 14 delayed CAG reports which elevated political tensions between the two parties. The recent revelations have severely damaged the AAP government while creating doubts about its method of governance.
The liquor policy scandal in Delhi faces increasing political heat together with active examinations as it remains a major issue in Delhi’s political landscape, likely to have far-reaching implications for the AAP’s future.
