Digital Desk: The West Bengal government, led by Mamata Banerjee, has declared official holidays for Durga Puja from September 30 to October 10. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated during a meeting with Durga Puja organizing committee members at the city's Netaji Indoor Stadium that the government will observe the Durga Puja carnival in Kolkata on October 8.
Notably, due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the carnival was not observed for two years.
The chief minister further declared that her government would increase the grant to the state's Durga Puja organizing committees from Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000. "The government holidays for Durga Puja will begin on September 30 and will last until October 10. The Durga Puja committees were given financial support of 50,000 last year. This year, the committees will receive 60,000," said Mamata Banerjee.
The chief minister of Bengal said that a massive rally will be held in Kolkata on September 1 to express gratitude to UNESCO for listing Kolkata's Durga Puja as part of the "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity."
"Congratulations! Durga puja is now inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity! 14 ICH elements from India have been inscribed on this list by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage," UNESCO had tweeted.
