Digital Desk: The Enforcement Directorate apprehended
Sushil Mantri in connection with a money-laundering probe. Sushil is the
chairman and managing director (CMD) of Mantri Developers.

According to the arrest record that ET was able to get,
the developer was arrested by ED for investigation after being implicated in a
case involving money laundering and cash diversion.

"Mantri Developers was impacted by the real estate
crash of 2007 and the subsequent demonetization. The builder struggled to
bounce back from the financial difficulties. He owes more than a billion rupees
to different financial institutions, the most of which are NPAs "According
to one of the knowledgeable insiders,

According to the ED arrest notice, Mantri was brought
into custody and called in for questioning following Section 19 of the Prevention
    of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The ED probe against the developer began on March 22 due
to an FIR filed against the company, its directors, and numerous employees in
    2020.

The police and ED have received several complaints from
homebuyers alleging that the accused organizations and individuals are involved
    in money laundering.

They alleged that the company used inventive strategies,
misleading brochures, and false delivery predictions for several projects to
    deceive potential consumers.

After making efforts to resolve his financial issues, the
developer was able to secure funding for his Mantri Serenity project from the
government-funded SWAMIH Investment Fund in late 2020.

The project of Mantri Developers had been in limbo for
more than a year due to a financial issue.

"Because the project is moving forward perfectly on
schedule, the SWAMHI fund is focused on seeing it through. Therefore, the
development is unlikely to affect Mantri Serenity, "a source with
knowledge of the development said. Mantri Developers and Gokulam Shelters, the
property's owner, are collaborating to develop Mantri Serenity.
