Digital Desk: Congress presidential polls candidate Mallikarjun Kharge, said on Sunday that he has not entered the polls to oppose anyone but to strengthen the party. Kharge claimed that both senior and young leaders had urged him to enter the fray.
He said that in line with ‘one person, one post’ principle of the party, he resigned as Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha on the day he filed the nomination.
There is unemployment, inflation is rising, the divide between rich and poor is widening, and all of the BJP's promises have yet to be delivered, Kharge said at a press conference flanked by Deepender Hooda, Syed Naseer Hussain and Gourav Vallabh.
In order to support Kharge in the AICC presidential election, Vallabh claimed that he, Hooda, and Hussain had resigned from their positions as Congress spokespersons.
When questioned about Shashi Tharoor's comments that he is a candidate for change while Kharge is a candidate for continuity and the status quo, Kharge responded that any choice regarding reform will be made collectively and not by a single person after the election.
He also denied rumours that the Gandhi family supported him, claiming that other leaders had pushed him to contest.
After former Jharkhand minister, K N Tripathi's nomination was turned down on Saturday, Kharge and Tharoor were the only candidates left in the race for the Congress presidency poll.
According to a notification issued by Congress on Thursday, the process for filing nominations for the election was from September 24 to 30.
The deadline for withdrawing nominations is October 8, while the deadline for evaluating the nomination papers was October 1.
On October 8, at 5:00 p.m., the final list of candidates will be made public.
If necessary, the election will take place on October 17. On October 19, the vote-counting process will begin, and the results will be announced that same day.
The poll will be attended by around 9,000 Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) delegates.
