IIT-BHU probed for playing 'vulgar' songs after flag hoisting

IIT-BHU Registrar Rajan Srivastava said the committee will deliver a report to the director in two weeks.

Digital Desk: An inquiry panel has been established at the Indian Institute of Technology-BHU (IIT-BHU) following a video of several students dancing to "objectionable" songs after the flag-hoisting ceremony on Independence Day.

The alleged incident allegedly took place at the institute's Gymkhana grounds on Monday around 9:30 am. After the flag-hoisting ceremony, some students began playing "objectionable" [Bhojpuri] songs.

Rajan Srivastava, the registrar of IIT-BHU, stated on Tuesday, "We learned of certain unacceptable behavior through the media. An internal committee has been formed to investigate the claims.

Within two weeks, the committee will deliver a report to the IIT-BHU director.

An official said that some teenagers linked their mobile phones to speakers, played some Bhojpuri songs, and started dancing after the event [for flag hoisting] ended and the teaching and non-teaching staff departed the area.

"Some of the songs might have been inappropriate for the setting. But the incident was the work of a few people... It shouldn't be connected to the institute in any way. Students showed their respect for the country and the national flag earlier in the day when patriotic songs were performed, according to the official.

Given that the event was a flag-hoisting ceremony and there are no restrictions on who can attend such a gathering, there were some strangers in attendance. Therefore, it's possible that someone from outside played the offensive tunes as well. The investigation will make all of that clear, the official predicted.

The official stated that the music was turned off and the area was removed as soon as the staff heard the "vulgar tunes."
