Several people were injured when their houses collapsed while they were asleep
Digital Desk: Late last night, a powerful storm accompanied with heavy rain swept through various parts of Lahowal in Dibrugarh district of Assam, leaving a trail of destruction. The severe damage occurred in Hatkhola and Habichuk, and violent winds took away all houses and shops and eliminated personal belongings. The homes of various people fell abruptly when they were trying fast asleep.
The storm inflicted severe damage on agricultural land because most farming operations in these resource-based territories rely on the land. Multiple hundreds of bighas of crops consisting of bitter gourd and pointed gourd, as well as maize, were totally ruined. Bamboo trellises that supported sponge gourd cultivation became fully destroyed as part of the farming structures. Thousands of farmers who spent thousands of rupees on their agricultural fields are now declared bankrupt due to complete crop destruction.
Many large trees were uprooted and blocked roads. Moreover, numerous areca nut and banana trees were completely devastated. The storm also broke electricity lines and shut down all electrical power supply throughout the affected areas. As of now, power restoration efforts are ongoing, but connectivity remains unstable.
Local residents and farmers are appealing for urgent government assistance, as the scale of the destruction has left many without shelter, livelihood, or basic services.
