The festival of Karwa Chauth is famous all over India but more specifically in the north of the country. On this festival, women show their love and loyalty to their husbands and the marriage sacrament. Famously observed by married girls and women, only foods having red color in them are eaten as it is part of a fast, they observe, which lasts from sunrise to moonlight with the purpose of long life, health, and prosperity of their husbands.
For the Marwari families, Karwa Chauth has a huge cultural value. Traditional and family-oriented, it is celebrated with passion; it concerns fidelity. Being Marwari, there is a lot of emphasis on rituals, cultural aspects, and families, making this festival a grand and emotional one.
The day begins very early for the women who eat the sargi, a meal that is presented to them by their mother-in-law. Following this, they fast and do not consume solid or liquid until they see the moon. All through the course of the day, women chant prayers for goddess Parvati and lord Shiva, requesting the long lives of their husbands.
Women also assemble for a recitation called karwa chauth katha, wherein the story of karwa chauth is related; the story is about an extremely dedicated and loyal wife who is queen Veervati. Adorned in colorful and crisp lehengas, often sarees with their hands adorned with intricate henna designs, the women join in the evening aarti or puja worshipping with karwas, earthen pots decorated with water.
The fast is only broken once the moon has been sighted. Karwa Chauth, particularly in the Marwari community, is essentially a celebration of togetherness, affection, loyalty, and continuity of culture in spirit.
