Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 90th Interpol general assembly on Tuesday at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, which was attended by delegations from 195 member countries comprised of ministers, country police chiefs, heads of national central bureaus, and senior police officers.
"It's time to look ahead as well as back. "Our Vedas say that noble thoughts should come from all directions, and India believes in global cooperation," Modi said at the opening of the Interpol general assembly.
The general assembly started today in New Delhi and it will continue till October 21.
"Interpol is approaching a watershed moment. It will be 100 years old in 2023. This is a rallying cry for global cooperation to make the world a better place. "India is a major contributor to UN peacekeeping operations," Modi said.
"At a time when nations and societies are turning inward, India calls for greater global cooperation. When threats are global, the response cannot be local." "It is past time for the entire world to band together to combat these threats," Modi said.
"There is a need to develop global strategies to defeat terrorism," Modi added.
Modi stated that by speeding up the process of issuing red notices against fugitives, Interpol can help control the proceeds of crimes generated through organised crime and corruption from being misused.
Modi also issued commemorative postal stamps and commemorative coins in denominations of 100 rupees.
Delegations from 195 Interpol member countries will attend the meeting, which will include ministers, country police chiefs, heads of national central bureaus, and senior police officers.
The general assembly is Interpol's supreme governing body, and it meets once a year to make key operational decisions.
The meeting is being held in India after a 25-year hiatus; it was last held in 1997.
India's proposal to host the Interpol general assembly in New Delhi in 2022, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of India's independence, was unanimously approved by the assembly.
According to the statement, the event provides an opportunity to showcase the best practises in India's law and order system to the entire world.
