Police also arrested 10 KIIT employees, including director-level officials, and security guards.
Digital Desk: Amid protests over a 20-year-old third-year Computer Science student's death at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Odisha, the father of the student Sunil Lamsal expressed confidence in the Indian judiciary system that it will provide justice to his daughter.
He added that he cannot be in Odisha for the entire duration of the probe, but he is confident of getting justice from the Indian government.
Citing 'roti-beti ka rishta'- which means a bond of livelihoods and marriages, Sunil Lamsal said that his daughter Prakriti Lamsal filed two complaints against a fellow student for harassment. However, the university did not take action against the student.
Lamsal further said that Prakriti called her mother two hours before her death. Her mother did not find any signs of anxiety.
Her death has led to protests by the Nepalese student community at KIIT. Around 1,500 students demanded justice for the deceased.
KIIT authorities have taken several actions, including the termination of two security staff members, and the suspension of two senior hostel officials and a senior administrative officer from the International Relations Office. The university issued an apology for making disparaging comments to the Nepalese protesters.
Police also arrested 10 KIIT employees, including director-level officials, and security guards.
Prakriti Lamsal, who allegedly committed suicide, first heard of KIIT through educational programmes. As her two cousins were also KIIT students, she joined the institute with ambitions. Her father said that she always dreamt of a better life for her family. She expressed her desire to become an engineer and look after her younger brother in the future.
