SpiceJet's flight returns to Delhi after crew notices smoke mid-air

Digital Desk: SpiceJet said on Saturday that its flight to Jabalpur was diverted back to Delhi after crew members noticed smoke in the cabin at around 5,000 feet.

Notably, in the last two weeks, SpiceJet aircraft had experienced five similar incidents. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation, which regulates aviation, is investigating each of the five incidents.

On June 19, a SpiceJet plane heading for Delhi carrying 185 passengers caught fire shortly after takeoff from the Patna airport, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing. Reportedly, the engine failed due to a bird strike.

In a separate incident on June 19, a flight bound for Jabalpur had to turn back to Delhi because of problems with cabin pressurization.

On June 24 and 25, two different aircraft's fuselage door warning lights illuminated during takeoff, prompting them to cancel their trips and return.

"The SpiceJet Q400 was operating SG-2962 (Delhi-Jabalpur) on July 2, 2022," the airline's spokesperson stated in a statement. 

The spokesperson added that the crew first noticed smoke at around 5,000 feet in the cabin.

"The pilots made the decision to head back to Delhi. The plane landed smoothly in Delhi, and the passengers departed without problem," the spokesperson claimed.
