Supreme Court to hear an appeal on July 26 concerning 'Ram Setu'

Ram Setu, also known as Adam's Bridge, is a network of limestone shoals that connects Pamban Island to the mainland.

Digital Desk: On Wednesday, the Supreme Court decided to hear BJP leader Subramanian Swamy's petition asking the Centre to proclaim the 'Ram Setu' as a national cultural site on July 26.

Ram Setu is a network of limestone shores that connects Pamban Island, off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, with Mannar Island, off the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka.

Former Rajya Sabha member Subramanian Swamy tweeted about the Ram Setu matter, saying, "Today CJ of SC agreed to hear me on Ancient Monument status for Ram Setu. Listed for July 26. After I got scrapped Sethu Project, Modi instructed officers on me flawlessly to block me from making Ram Setu a Heritage site. Adv @satyasabharwal assisted me."

A bench consisting of Chief Justice N V Ramana and justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli took notice of Swamy's comments that it was an urgent and minor case that needed to be heard.

On a lighter side, CJI Ramana informed Swamy that it might be added after his retirement.

Swamy claimed that he had already won the first round of the case, in which the Centre acknowledged Ram Setu's existence. He went on to say that the Union minister in question had arranged a meeting in 2017 to discuss his request, but nothing came of it.

In his PIL against the disputed Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project, the BJP leader addressed the subject of making the Ram Setu a national monument.
