Teen Girl Sriya Lenka, Becomes First K-Pop Star from India

Sriya was born in Rourkela in 2003, and she is trained in Hindustani classical as well as Odissi and other forms of contemporary dance.

Digital Desk: An 18-year-old girl from Odisha, Sriya Lanka
has become the first-ever K-pop artist from India. Lenka has been chosen to be
part of the Korean pop band named
    Blackswan
along with Gabriela Dalcin of Brazil.

    Blackswan's
label DR Music sharing the news on Instagram wrote,
"Sriya and Gabi were finally selected as members of Blackswan after participating
in the global audition program for the last 6
    months."

    It should be
noted that Blackswan made its debut in 2020, and the group now has six
members—Youngheun, Fatou, Judy, Leia, Sriya, and Gabi.

    Sriya was
reportedly born in Rourkela in 2003, and she is trained in Hindustani classical
as well as Odissi and other forms of contemporary dance.

"Since I have a deep voice, I faced
difficulty in finding the right vocal trainer. My grandmother helped me find
one", the teen was quoted as saying by Odisha Bytes.

"She took me to a Hindustani classical
music teacher, who taught me twice a week. But, for the western songs, I had to
rely on online videos and self-learning, "Sriya said.

    Rourkela girl was
selected last year among the finalists to train with Blackswan in Seoul. After
the group's oldest member, Hyeme, left in November 2020, the search for the
    fifth member started.

    DR Music
announced a global audition to replace Hyeme in May of last year. From a pool
of 4,000 candidates, Sriya Lanka and Gabriela Dalcin were picked as finalists.

    Blackswan was
earlier supposed to pick only one member, but has decided to induct both Lenka
    and Dalcin.

    "With
their debut, we will be back with the new blackswan," DR Music posted on
    Instagram.

    It may be
mentioned that the two selected finalists, Lenka and Dalcin, will be practising
in Seoul for the next few months. The two have been put through a rigorous
training programme that includes everything from
regular voice, rap, and dance instruction to personal conditioning, language,
and musical instrument lessons for the last five months.
