Transgender persons to get composite healthcare services under AB-PMJAY

The MoU will give transgender people in India who hold a transgender certificate from the National Portal for Transgender Persons access to healthcare benefits.

Digital Desk: National Health Authority (NHA), a division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment Wednesday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide the transgender community with a comprehensive health care package.

Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana will oversee the comprehensive and integrated health programme (AB-PMJAY).

In the presence of Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, and Dr. Virendra Kumar, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. R. S. Sharma, CEO, National Health Authority (NHA), and Shri R. Subramanyam, Secretary DoSJE, signed the aforementioned Memorandum of Understanding.

"The MOU has established the foundation for a watershed transformational revolution in the society.  Beyond ensuring equality for the underprivileged group, the action that offers specific healthcare benefits to the transgender community,","  Union Health Minister Dr. Mandaviya said.

The provision of healthcare services under the scheme, according to the minister, was an important step towards a more inclusive society because the transgender minority faces stigma and isolation from society.

Given that Dr. Ambedkar advocated for an inclusive society with equality for all of the nation's population groupings, it is only fitting that the MOU is being signed at the Dr. Ambedkar International Center today, he added.

The MoU will give transgender people in India who hold a transgender certificate from the National Portal for Transgender Persons access to healthcare benefits.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated in a news release that "MoSJE will provide Rs. 5 lakh insurance cover for every transgender beneficiary per year." For the transgender category, a thorough package master is being created, containing the current AB PM-JAY packages as well as tailored packages (such as SRS and treatment) for transgenders. They will be qualified to receive care in any hospital with an AB-PMJAY empanelled hospital around the nation where particular packages are offered. The programme would apply to all transgender people who weren't already covered by other states- or centre-sponsored programmes.
