Fraud Alert! Woman duped of Rs 1.67 lakh while placing online order for Rs 400 birthday cake
The woman told the Bhosari MIDC police that on May 4, she searched on the internet for a bakery shop to order a birthday cake and found the number of a cake shop. She then placed the order.

Digital Desk: A woman from the Moshi area of Pune city was duped for Rs 1.67 lakh while trying to place an order for a birthday cake. A cyber-fraudster who impersonated the bakery shop’s employee tricked her into sending the money.

According to reports, the woman informed the police that she had been duped for Rs 1.67 lakh when she was trying to place an online order for a cake worth Rs 400.

Meanwhile, the woman told the Bhosari MIDC police that in order to place an order for a birthday cake, she searched on the internet for a bakery shop and found a number, and then she placed the order.

Later, a man who pretended to be the shop’s employee asked the woman to make a payment of Rs 400 for the cake she ordered. When she tried to make the payment, she faced some problems and couldn’t make the payment. The employee then shared a QR code with the woman to make the payment and, as soon as she scanned the QR code, an amount of Rs 2000 was deducted from her account.

When the woman complained about the wrong transaction, the fraudster assured her that he will refund the difference amount.

However, as reported by the police officials, the woman received a refund of Rs 10, and immediately, within minutes, Rs 1.67 lakh was withdrawn from her account in six transactions.

The woman then realised that she had been duped and soon approached the police to lodge a complaint on Monday.

Notably, an FIR was registered by her with MIDC Bhosari Police Station.

It is to be noted that a case has been filed in connection with the incident under sections 419 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and section 66(d) of the Information Technology Act on the charges of cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, punishment for identity theft, and punishment for cheating by personation by using computer resources.
