Digital Desk: A tragic gunfight near Koutruk in Kangchup, Imphal West district, Manipur, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to four others, including the daughter of one of the deceased. The incident occurred around 2 pm on Sunday when suspected armed militants launched an unprovoked attack, targeting unarmed villagers who had temporarily left vulnerable areas.
The deceased has been identified as 33-year-old Surbala Devi from Phayeng Umang Leikai. She was rushed to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital in Imphal but was declared dead on arrival. Her 13-year-old daughter, Ng Rojiya, sustained injuries to her right hand and is receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Among the injured are 30-year-old police officer N Robert from Awang Khunou Maning Leikai, who was wounded along with 26-year-old Inao Takhellambam and 19-year-old Thadoi Heigrujam. Takhellambam was taken to Raj Medicity Hospital with injuries to his lower abdomen, while Heigrujam sustained an injury to his right shoulder.
In response to the attack, the local administration has imposed a curfew in Imphal West district. The Manipur government has condemned the assault, which involved drones, bombs, and sophisticated weapons reportedly used by Kuki militants.
A press release from the Manipur home ministry described the attack as an act of terror against unarmed villagers and assured that the state government is committed to bringing those responsible to justice.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s administration has initiated immediate measures to control the situation and prevent further violence. Senior police officials have been instructed to remain on high alert and coordinate joint combing operations to ensure the safety of the region. The Manipur Director General of Police, Rajini Singh, emphasized the need for proper coordination between forces to avoid any further incidents.
