Digital Desk: Air Marshal (Retired) Pranab Kumar Barbora PVSM VM ADC has passed away who was the former Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force.
Air Marshal Barbora was born in Shillong on December 10, 1950, and was commissioned as a Fighter Pilot in the Indian Air Force on June 13, 1970. Having flown more than 3,500 hours, he was an accomplished pilot who fought in the Vietnam War.
He worked at the IAF's flagship flying establishment, Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment, as a licensed Flying Instructor and Fighter Combat Leader. He worked at Air Headquarters in the Directorate of Air Staff Inspection (DASI) twice. He had finished his upper command course at the College of Combat, Mhow, and was a graduate.
He participated in the IAF squadron induction process and was part of the team that established the Air Combat Simulator, the first of its kind in Asia. Command of a MiG-21 squadron, Chief Operations Officer of a fighter airbase, and Air Officer Commanding of a premier fighter airbase under Eastern Air Command are just a few of his many operational duties.
In addition to holding the position of Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Inspection) at Air Headquarters, he has served as Air Attaché at the Indian Embassy in Moscow and Assistant Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Perspective Plans and Force Structure) in HQ Integrated Defence Staff. Before assuming command as the AOC-in-C for the first time, he was a Senior Air Staff Officer, at EAC. Later on, he was appointed AOC-in-C for WAC.
He was the first well-known figure from the North East to have such a highly sought-after position in the armed forces. The Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and the Vayu Sena Medal (VM) have been awarded to Air Marshal Barbora. He is also one of the Honorary Aides-de-Camp (ADC) to the President, who is the Supreme Commander of the AFI.
