Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are poised for continued leadership under their current ruling parties...
Digital Desk: The election results for the Himalayan states of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh are being revealed today as votes are being counted. In Arunachal Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already made significant strides, with 10 candidates, including incumbent Chief Minister Pema Khandu, elected unopposed. Accordingly, the counting is now for the remaining 50 out of 60 Assembly seats.
The BJP has already surpassed the halfway mark, securing 10 seats and leading in 22 others. This mirrors their 2019 success when they won 41 seats. Their ally, Conrad Sangma's National People's Party (NPP), is leading in three seats.
In Sikkim, the incumbent Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) is also performing strongly, leading in 27 out of 32 seats. The Opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) is leading in two seats, while the Congress has yet to secure any breakthroughs in either state.
Among the unopposed winners in Arunachal Pradesh are Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Techi Kaso, Nyato Dukam, and Mutchu Mithi. Khandu has secured his Mukto seat in Tawang district unopposed for the third time in four terms. In the 2019 elections, Janata Dal (United) won seven seats, NPP five, Congress four, People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) one, and two independents were also victorious.
In Sikkim, SKM is aiming for a second consecutive term as votes are counted for 32 assembly seats. Both SKM and SDF have candidates in all 32 seats, while the BJP has candidates in 31 seats, and the new Citizen Action Party-Sikkim (CAP-S) in 30. The Congress is contesting 12 seats.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang of SKM is contesting from the Rhenock and Soreng-Chakung constituencies. Former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, who led the state for five terms, remains confident that the SDF will return to power. In the 2019 elections, SKM ended the SDF's 25-year rule by winning 17 seats to the SDF’s 15, despite SDF polling more votes overall.
Notably, both Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are poised for continued leadership under their current ruling parties, with the BJP and SKM showing strong leads.
