Digital Desk: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday visited Police Bazar on Monday, where the entire building had been destroyed in fire. Along with DGP LR Bishnoi and other key officials, the Chief Minister was joined by Chief Secretary DP Wahlang.
It took almost more than 24 hours to douse the fire that broke out on Saturday.
Conrad K. Sangma, the chief minister, visited the spot, met with the staff, and reviewed the situation. He then instructed them to submit a report on the occurrence, which resulted in one fatality. He has requested that investigators conduct all building safety audits to discover what caused the incident.
He expressed his concerns with the families affected by the occurrence.
"The incident could have been disastrous because it occurred in the centre of the market area, which was crowded and difficult for the fire department to access. It was a difficult effort, but all involved departments and officials—in particular, the fire service, army, air force, Assam rifles, BSF, police, administration, and the community—worked together to control the situation," he said.
He acknowledged the efforts of all parties involved in preventing the fire from spreading from the impacted building to the other nearby structures and residences. He stated that the incident would be thoroughly investigated to determine what started the fire.
"We will investigate the situation carefully and develop a response mechanism on how we can contain and prevent such a situation in the future," he said.
He said that the building had several godowns which made the entire operation challenging but all stakeholders have shown their utmost commitment in dealing with the situation. He promised that safety audits and other steps would be taken to make sure that such circumstances don't happen again. He added that the cabinet will convene on October 18 to consider the issue in detail.

With the Chief Secretary, DGP, and other senior authorities, the Chief Minister is currently evaluating the entire episode.
