Digital desk: The Congress party has decided to run independently in the Mizoram Lok Sabha polls after talks to form a pre-poll alliance with the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) failed.
On April 19, Mizoram is expected to cast ballots in the Lok Sabha elections. There is only one Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram.
Prior to this, the Congress and the MNF had discussions to establish a united front against the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM). The Congress had governed Mizoram for almost 20 years, starting in 1987.
But since there could be no agreement, the Congress decided to run its own independent campaign in Mizoram for the Lok Sabha elections.
On the other hand, the MNF, which is headed by the previous chief minister of Mizoram, supports the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the federal level and is affiliated with the BJP-led Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
As for the ruling ZPM in Mizoram, it has selected 46-year-old entrepreneur Richard Vanlalhmangaiha as its candidate, making his political debut. The ZPM is running independently for the Lok Sabha for the first time since its founding in 2017.
C Lalrosanga of the MNF currently serves as the incumbent MP from Mizoram. Both BJP and MNF have not released names of the candidates for the next elections.
