Digital Desk: A two-month curfew has been imposed in Manipur's Chudachandpur district, officials said on Tuesday, after over 30 people were injured in fighting between two factions on Monday night.
Following fresh incidents of violence in response to tribal bodies' call for mass funerals of 64 bodies at mortuaries, the Manipur government enforced prohibitory orders under CrPC Section 144 in Churachandpur district for two months on Tuesday.
However, the mass burial was scheduled for Wednesday at the site.
Security sources stated, that the situation was tense but under control after the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITFL), a powerful Churachandpur-based tribal council, announced the mass burial of over 64 individuals murdered amid ethnic conflicts in the state.
Though authorities are keeping quiet about what sparked the brawl on Monday, reports say there were disagreements between tribal groups over the designation of the burial site. One group proposed naming the mass burial location the "Kuki-Zo" martyrs cemetery. The other desired the moniker "Kuki-Zomi-Mizo-Hmar."
Chudachandpur Deputy Commissioner Dharun Kumar S. The order said Section 144 of the CRPC has been imposed till February 18 next year, or two months, based on police reports of ‘clashes and sporadic violence between two groups’.
The incidents took place in several parts of Chudachandpur town and Thingkhangphai village. About 30 people were injured in the district, which is dominated by the Kuki-Zomi tribes.
The order said, ‘It has been reported that there is still a possibility of disturbance of peace due to conflict between two groups of people, resulting in open clashes in a communal atmosphere and the situation is still tense.’
Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, the Kuki Students' Organisation and the Zomi Students' Union released a joint proclamation aimed at maintaining peaceful coexistence and mutual respect following a meeting.
The announcement came after the KSO apologised on behalf of the aggressive crowd that assaulted and injured Zomi citizens.
Since May, ethnic confrontations between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups in Manipur have killed at least 196 people and displaced almost 50,000.
After the fresh round of violence, the Zomi Students’ Federation announced an "indefinite emergency shutdown" in Churachandpur district.
