Digital Desk: Manipur's Jiribam district is once again in the grip of disruption as fresh waves of violence have erupted, leading to the evacuation of over 200 people from Meitei villages to safer locations. The recent outbreak of violence saw the burning of houses belonging to individuals residing in the outlying villages of Lamtai Khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal, and Begra, allegedly by suspected militants.

The displaced individuals, primarily from villages situated more than 30 kilometers away from Jiribam town, have sought refuge in relief camps set up at the Jiri Sports Complex. In response to the escalating situation, authorities have deployed additional security personnel to the affected areas to restore peace and ensure the safety of residents.

The Manipur police have taken swift action, ordering state police commando personnel from Imphal Valley to proceed to Jiribam immediately to assist in maintaining law and order. The move comes in the wake of a tragic incident on Thursday evening, where a 59-year-old man, Soibam Saratkumar Singh, was allegedly killed by militants from another community while he was tending to his farm.

The ensuing tension prompted locals to set fire to an abandoned structure as a form of retaliation, underscoring the palpable fear and anger gripping the region. Furthermore, residents staged a protest outside the Jiribam police station, demanding the return of licensed firearms confiscated from them during the elections.

Jiribam, characterized by its diverse ethnic composition, comprising Meiteis, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis, and non-Manipuris, has hitherto remained relatively insulated from the ethnic strife plaguing Manipur. However, the recent escalation in violence underscores the fragility of peace in the region, with ethnic tensions between Meiteis from Imphal Valley and Kukis from the hills resulting in numerous casualties and displacements over the past year.

As authorities strive to quell the unrest and restore normalcy, the need for dialogue and reconciliation among the various communities in Jiribam becomes increasingly urgent to prevent further bloodshed and foster lasting peace.
