    Sikkim Cloud Burst: Govt of Sikkim announces shutdown of educational institutions until October 15

    Digital Desk: The Government of Sikkim has declared a state of emergency in response to the cloud burst that caused catastrophic flooding in the Teesta River. 


    The Sikkim Government's Department of Education issued a circular on Wednesday morning. "In continuation to circular Ref. No. 211/Adm/Edn dated: 4/10/2023 is to hereby further direct that all the educational institutions both Government and Private /Schools, Colleges and Universities, within the State of Sikkim shall remain closed till 15th October 2023 due to the prevailing inclement weather" referenced the department's circular.




    This order is in effect until October 15, 2023. Furthermore, at Mintokgang, a high-level discussion was held to review the present situation and assess the degree of damage. 


    According to Sikkim Chief Secretary VB Pathak, up to 3,000 visitors from all parts of the country were stranded in various districts of the state.


    Regarding the visitors, the Sikkim government gives tourists advise to delay their travelling schedules. Check the notification here




    At least 14 people were killed and 102 others, including 22 troops, were missing after flash floods in the Teesta River valley on Wednesday caused by a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in north Sikkim. Furthermore, the disaster has affected more than 20,000 people.
