Digital Desk: On August 3, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur notified Parliament that Manipur would receive India's first national-level sports university.

The state-of-the-art institution will cost Rs 643.34 crore to construct.

Thakur stated that, in contrast to past governments that had a 'Look East Policy,' the present Narendra Modi government has embraced an 'Act East Policy,' with a special emphasis on sports infrastructure in the Northeast region.

"In an oral reply to a Parliament question on Sports Infrastructure Facilities in the North East Region, Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Anurag Singh Thakur said that with the shift from 'Look East Policy' to 'Act East Policy,' the Government has given special emphasis and impetus to sports infrastructure in the North-east region," Anurag Thakur said.

Based on a press statement from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports detailing Thakur's response, the country's first national Sports University has been given to the northeast state of Manipur at a total sanctioned cost of Rs.643.34 crore.

As part of this pledge, two Khelo India centres will be constructed in each district of the Northeast, strengthening the sports ecosystem and encouraging young athletes to follow their goals.

The Minister added that 227 Khelo India centres have already been established in the North Eastern States, creating an environment favourable to the development of sporting skills.

To further improve the sports infrastructure in the North East, the government is currently working on 75 projects for sporting infra costing an astounding amount of 520 crore rupees.
