Digital Desk: In a significant and decisive move, the Liangmai Naga Council Manipur, the apex body representing the Liangmai Naga tribe in the northeastern state of Manipur, has passed a unanimous resolution to ban poppy cultivation in areas dominated by Liangmai Nagas. The resolution was adopted during their half-yearly meeting held at Tamah in the Tamenglong district on October 12.
The resolution mandates that all village authorities within Liangmai Naga-dominated regions destroy their poppy harvest by the end of October. Non-compliance with this directive will result in stern action against those involved in poppy cultivation.
Furthermore, the Liangmai Council's resolution stipulates that no portion of farmland or forest in their areas will be permitted for poppy cultivation or leasing for such purposes.
In addition to their local efforts, the Council has appealed to both the central government and the Manipur state government to take substantial action against poppy cultivation within the state. The Council has also called upon all citizens to actively contribute to the creation of a drug-free society.
This resolution carries significant weight as it aligns with the ongoing anti-drug initiatives by the Manipur government under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The issue of poppy cultivation has been a central point of contention and a contributing factor to the current unrest in Manipur. The Liangmai Naga Council's proactive stance against poppy cultivation is a substantial step forward in combating the drug menace that has plagued the region.
