Digital Desk: A police officer stationed in the strife-torn town of Moreh, Manipur, lost his life on Tuesday morning after unidentified armed miscreants opened fire at a police team. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chingtham Anand Kumar was fatally shot in the stomach during the attack, and despite efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident unfolded as the police team was inspecting a designated site for the construction of a helipad. Armed miscreants seized the opportunity to open fire on the officers, marking a disturbing escalation of violence in the region.
Reports suggest that the ambush may have been an attempt to assassinate the Superintendent of the Special Commando, highlighting the escalating tension between the Meitei community in the Imphal valley and the Kukis in the hill areas. Ethnic clashes have persisted in Manipur since May 3, causing significant concern among local authorities and residents.
In response to this tragic event, Chief Minister N Biren Singh convened an emergency cabinet meeting to address the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Moreh. The cabinet condemned the attack and approved an ex gratia payment of Rs 50 lakh to be given to the next of kin of the deceased police officer. Furthermore, the government pledged to offer suitable employment to the family and ordered an immediate investigation into the incident to bring the culprits to justice.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the deep-seated tensions in Manipur, emphasizing the need for a swift and effective resolution to the ongoing ethnic conflicts.
