Manipur: Over 200 people displaced due to violence repatriated from Myanmar as situation improves

Following the start of the ethnic violence on May 3, a large number of people left the state.

Digital Desk: Over 200 people who had been displaced since the unrest started on May 3 from Myanmar have now been brought back to the state's relief camp with assistance from the Assam Rifles, according to officials. This is an encouraging sign in the violently torn Manipur.

From Myanmar, more than 400 people have already been returned.
89 women and 37 children were returned to Manipur's Moreh from Tamu, Myanmar, in the most recent repatriation effort, according to the government.

"The Assam Rifles in Manipur helped in the repatriation of 212 people, including 89 women and 37 children, who had been displaced from Tamu (Myanmar) to Moreh since 03 May 2023. More than 400 people have already been returned to Myanmar," officials said on Sunday.

Following the start of the ethnic violence on May 3, a large number of people left the state. A few individuals, mainly tribals, fled to Assam and Mizoram in search of safety.

Conflicts between Meiteis and Kukis in Manipur have resulted in more than 160 fatalities and many more injuries since May 3.

    Manipur BSF deployment

In the Ukhrul district of Manipur, where three people were killed in a gunfight and their mangled remains were found on Friday (August 18), sources claimed a BSF detachment is likely to be sent in the Thawai Kuki village.

They claimed that the security personnel are searching the nearby hills' woodlands, where it is thought that the armed men may be hiding.

A few days after Chief Minister N Biren Singh requested information from the Churachandpur district commissioner and SP regarding a group of persons openly displaying sophisticated weapons during an Independence Day procession, the BSF detachment is expected to be sent to the area.

According to sources, the BSF would likely be deployed in nine districts throughout the state to help the administration keep the peace.

Anusuiya Uikey, the governor of the conflict-torn state, was recently briefed on the current security situation by BSF (EC) ADG Sonali Mishra and four senior officers at Raj Bhavan.
