Mob attempts to attack the ancestral home of Manipur's CM N Biren Singh in Imphal; Visuals emerge

The event occurred amid violent student protests in Manipur over the deaths of two youngsters...

Digital Desk: Despite a security clampdown and curfew in the Imphal valley, a mob attempted to attack Chief Minister N Biren Singh's unoccupied ancestral mansion on Thursday night.

After firing in the air, security forces were able to thwart the attempt. Reportedly, Singh lives in a secure official house in the heart of the state capital.

"An attempt was made to attack the chief minister's ancestral house in Imphal's Heingang locality. The mob was stopped about 100-150 metres away from the house by security forces," a police official stated.

Nobody stays in the residence anymore, even though it is also secured around the clock, according to the officer.

The officer went on to say, "Two groups of people came from different directions and approached the CM's ancestral residence but they were stopped."

The RAF and state police used tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

The officials turned off the electricity in the entire region to assist in decreasing the visibility of the protestors. More barriers were put to the previous ones around the residence.

Protesters also set fire to tyres in the middle of a neighbouring road. Ambulances were spotted approaching the scene, however, no one has been injured.

Incidents happened this far in violence-hit Manipur:

The event occurred amid violent student protests in Manipur over the deaths of two youngsters.

In the early hours of Thursday, a mob vandalised the deputy commissioner's office in Imphal West district and set fire to two four-wheelers.

On Wednesday, a curfew was reinstated in Imphal East and West districts as security forces battled the violent protests that had left 65 people injured since Tuesday.

A new round of violence erupted in the state capital on Tuesday, a day after photographs of the bodies of two missing teenagers, a man and a girl, went viral on social media.

Earlier, several ministers' homes were attacked in Manipur, which has been embroiled in ethnic violence for about five months.
