Sikkim flash flood: Death toll rises, Govt issues another glacial lake burst alert
Authorities have started evacuating locals from the area as the lakes are at a risk of bursting...

Digital desk: As many as 40 people lost their lives after a glacial lake burst its banks and triggered flash floods this week in Sikkim.

The Teesta River experienced significant flooding on Wednesday as a result of the Lhonak Lake in the mountainous northeastern state of Sikkim overflowing as a result of a cloudburst that precipitated severe rains and an apparent landslide.

Authorities in Sikkim reported that the most recent disaster, which occurred just before the popular festive and tourist season in the picturesque state, had an adverse impact on 22,000 people's lives.

On the other hand, due to bad weather conditions that prevented the helicopter from landing, 25 NDRF personnel who traveled to Chungthang from Guwahati for rescue operations had to return to Bagdogra.

Due to the possibility of explosives and ammunition washed away from an army camp in the recent flash floods, the Sikkim government has issued another glacier lake burst alert and urged tourists to postpone their travel plans.

Authorities have started evacuating locals from the area because Shako Cho Lake, which is close to Lachen, is at risk of bursting.

"In Lachen and Lachung, almost 3,000 people are stranded. 3,150 people who have gone there on motorcycles are also stuck due to the floods, all people will be evacuated using Army and Air Force helicopters," Vijay Bhushan Pathak, the chief secretary of Sikkim, stated.
