Digital Desk: Sikkim has emerged as a symbol of safety and security registering the lowest number of reported murders among Indian states by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
Being among the safest locations to live in India is a new feather in Sikkim's cap, which is already honoured for its rich cultural heritage. Based on the detailed statistics available from the NCRB for 2022, Sikkim reported a meagre 9 murder cases in the whole year. Comparing this accomplishment to the grim statistics from other states—Bihar led the list with an astounding 2,930 recorded murders, followed by Maharashtra with 2,295; Madhya Pradesh with 1,978; and Rajasthan with 1,834—makes it even more impressive. West Bengal was even lower than these states with 1,696 murders reported.
Beyond this significant accomplishment, Sikkim's total crime statistics demonstrate remarkable safety and vigilance. In 2022, there were 549 IPC offences reported in the state, translating to an 80.3 crime rate per lakh inhabitants. The charge sheet rate, which stands impressively at 55.5%, is equally outstanding. Sikkim reported 270 cases of SLL offences, with an impressive charge sheeting rate of 98.2%.
When it comes to particular crime categories, Sikkim has an excellent track record. Section 376 of the IPC limits the number of rape cases to just four. Notably, the state deviated from national trends by reporting zero cases of unlawful assembly (Sections 143, 144, & 145).
There were just 86 recorded property-related crimes in Sikkim in 2022, which is a very low number. Sikkim has demonstrated its commitment to safety by reporting no cases of crimes against women under the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act of 1956, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act of 2005, and the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961.
In addition, Sikkim distinguishes itself in the field of social law. Under the Juvenile Justice Care and Protection of Children Act, 2000 & 2015, as well as the Child Labor (Prohibition & Regulation) Act, 1986, the state kept a minimal record of instances.
Sikkim continues to be a control region with only 5 recorded cases, despite nationwide concerns about acts involving weapons and explosives.
The fact that Sikkim has managed to keep its crime rate low especially when it comes to homicides—says a lot about the effectiveness of its government and the peace that exists among its people. The state now serves as an example of safety and justice, establishing a benchmark for others to follow and reinforcing its position as the country's haven for security and tranquillity.
