Digital Desk: On World AIDS Day, the spotlight turns to Tripura as the state grapples with a concerning surge in HIV/AIDS cases. According to the latest report released by the Tripura State AIDS Control Society, the total count stands at 5,269 cases, among which 576 cases afflict students.

The breakdown as of October 2023 reveals a distribution of 1,022 cases among females, 4,246 among males, and one case among transgender individuals. Shockingly, the state witnesses a monthly average of 150-200 new HIV cases.

Within the current fiscal year (April to October 2023), testing reached 116,318 individuals, yielding 1,111 positive cases. The highest numbers are concentrated in the West district with 1,594 cases, followed by Dhalai district at 906 and North District at 763 cases. Other districts show varying figures ranging from 238 to 542 cases.

Of notable concern are 29 cases attributed to individuals infected abroad or holding foreign citizenship. Additionally, 2,545 cases stem from injectable drug usage. To combat this, the Tripura State AIDS Control Society has implemented Opioid Substitution Therapy, aiding 5,267 intravenous drug users, of which 430 have completed the treatment, aiming for their successful reintegration into society.

This report serves as a stark reminder of the challenges Tripura faces in tackling HIV/AIDS and underscores the critical need for intensified awareness campaigns and robust healthcare interventions. The figures, accurate as of October 2023, urge immediate and concerted efforts to stem this concerning trend.
