Digital Desk: In a shocking incident, a 39-year-old tribal woman in the Dhalai district of Tripura sold her newborn daughter due to extreme. The baby girl, born at the Sub-Divisional Hospital on Thursday, was sold the following day to a couple for Rs 5,000. As per reports, the woman has four other children, and her husband died by suicide five months ago due to poverty while she was pregnant.

However, the baby was rescued and returned to her mother on Saturday. Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury of the CPI(M) criticized the BJP government and TIPRA Motha party for neglecting the basic needs of the tribal community. Chaudhury blamed the administration for the dire circumstances faced by the woman and many others in remote areas.

“I have written a letter to the chief secretary requesting him to arrange works under MGNREGS in the remote areas. I have also requested to solve the basic problems of the people living in hilly and remote places,” Chaudhury stated, highlighting the urgent need for government intervention.

Dhalai District Magistrate Saju Vaheed A. confirmed that the mother and her newborn have been placed in a shelter home in Gandacherra. “The woman and her children have been in distress due to poverty, especially after her husband’s death. But she didn’t sell her documents and ration card to others,” Vaheed noted, adding that the administration has provided some support to the family.

This incident highlights the severe economic challenges faced by many tribal communities in Tripura, calling for comprehensive measures to address poverty and provide sustainable support to vulnerable families.
