Digital Desk: In a groundbreaking moment for Meghalaya, IPS Idashisha Nongrang has made history by becoming the first woman to hold the position of Director General of Police (DGP) in the state. Her appointment, announced on Saturday marks a significant milestone in the state's law enforcement history and is a testament to her dedication and expertise in the field.

IPS Nongrang, a member of the 1992 batch of IPS officers from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre (Meghalaya Wing), will succeed LR Bishnoi upon his retirement on May 19. Her two-year term as DGP will commence on May 20, 2024, and conclude on May 19, 2026.

The selection of IPS Nongrang as the new DGP was made by the Meghalaya Security Commission, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. The commission chose her from among three officers recommended by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the role of police chief. The other two officers considered for the position were RP Meena and Deepak Kumar.

IPS Nongrang's appointment is significant not only because she is the first woman to hold the position but also because she is a tribal lady from Meghalaya. Her achievement is a source of immense pride for the state and serves as an inspiration to women and young girls across the region.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma congratulated IPS Nongrang on her appointment, stating, "Heartiest congratulations to Smti Idashisha Nongrang, IPS, on her appointment as the new DGP. Breaking barriers and making history, she becomes the first tribal lady from our state to hold this position, a moment of immense pride for all of us. Wishing her all the best!"

IPS Nongrang's journey to the top is marked by her current role as Special DG at Meghalaya Police. Her selection as the new DGP underscores her exceptional qualifications and leadership capabilities, which have earned her recognition within the law enforcement community.

As IPS Nongrang assumes her new role, she is poised to lead the Meghalaya Police force with her expertise and dedication, setting a new standard for women in law enforcement and inspiring future generations of women to pursue careers in this field.
