Shillong to Undergo Transformation: Meghalaya CM Unveils Ambitious Infrastructure Projects

Chief Minister conducted a thorough inspection of several locations in Shillong

Digital Desk: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma revealed a comprehensive plan to revamp Shillong, focusing on enhancing its infrastructure and aesthetics. The government has earmarked nearly 25 acres of land for various projects aimed at beautifying and decongesting the city.

Accompanied by officials from key departments, including PWD, Urban Affairs, Forest, and Environment, the Chief Minister conducted a thorough inspection of several locations in Shillong. The proposed initiatives include the development of new walkways, green parks, recreational spaces, museums, and cultural centers to showcase Meghalaya's rich heritage.

At Barik Point, an iconic structure featuring a National Flag visible across the city will be erected to symbolize unity and pride. The project will also incorporate public utilities like restaurants, parking spaces, and amenities for residents and visitors.

The plan involves a phased approach, starting with the relocation of existing offices in July and new construction commencing in September to minimize disruptions. Careful consideration will be given to conserving greenery while implementing new infrastructure.

Addressing Shillong's traffic congestion, the Chief Minister outlined measures to create additional parking spaces, including multi-level car parking, to reduce on-street parking and improve traffic flow. A new road connecting NEFA Secretariat to the military hospital will be constructed to alleviate congestion at Anjali Point, a major bottleneck in the city.

During the inspection, Sangma directed the Forest and Environment Department to relocate animals from Phan Nonglait Park to the newly constructed State Zoo in Ri-Bhoi district. He also reviewed the progress of the integrated market construction at Polo, emphasizing a holistic approach to upgrading Shillong's infrastructure and quality of life.
