Kolkata: More than 80 people have been arrested from different parts of the city on Christmas Eve. For flouting covid protocols, a senior official said. Another 191 revelers were taken into custody for not wearing masks as huge crowds swarmed in many parts of the city.

Four persons were arrested outside a pub, for creating a ruckus and manhandling policemen, who tried to stop them from causing a commotion.
The four revelers were instantly thrown out of the pub for causing a nuisance. The four were engaged in a brawl with security guards posted outside the pub, authorities said.
Over 3,000 policemen were deployed in different parts of the city to keep a check on untoward activities, during Christmas festivities.
“We have deployed police personnel in plain clothes across the city to prevent any attempt to create disturbance amid the festivities,” added an official.
Meanwhile, state governments have been ramping up their Covid preparedness by putting back curbs and restrictions, amid rising covid cases.
The new Omicron variant has seen a surge in the number of Covid cases in the country, with Maharashtra recording the maximum number of Omicron cases followed by Delhi and Gujarat.
Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the nation a day ago, said that people should not panic but strictly follow Covid appropriate behavior when in public spaces.
PM Modi also announced that precautionary doses for the health workers will begin from January 10, 2022, along with vaccination for children aged 15-18 years from January 3 onwards.

On the other hand, state authorities have gone cracking on covid violators, imposing night curfews to stop the spread of the infection. Covid protocols have been imposed again, failing which violators will have to pay a fine to the authorities.
Delhi officials have collected Rs 1.54 crores, along with fines for covid protocol violations in the last week.
A horrific scene was witnessed ahead of the Christmas celebrations when many shoppers were witnessed not wearing masks, violating Covid appropriate behaviour, spitting in public, in the crowded areas of the capital.
