23-year old designs diabetic footwear; sells to 85 hospitals

    Digital Desk:

A 23-year-old Vidhan Bhaiya has designed diabetic footwear for patients who are suffering from diabetes disease. He was inspired to launch Dr. Brinsley, a home-based venture that manufactures diabetic footwear.

He got his inspiration for making this product when he sensed his favorite uncle's discomfort on being photographed at a family event in 2016.

Vidhan remembered, "the 'style icon of the family' had lately been diagnosed with diabetic neuropathy and didn't want to be portrayed in his heavy shoes."

While his stylish uncle was his first client, Vidhan's brainchild has been associated with as many as 85 hospitals across the nation and influenced the lives of nearly a thousand diabetic patients, he said.

Vidhan also shared with The Better India, "Every twenty seconds, a foot is amputated due to diabetes across the world. About half of these cases can be prevented if patients wear appropriate footwear. The concept isn't new at all, but adherence is low because of the way most diabetic shoes look. I began my company with an idea to innovate at a component-level and combine medical utility with style."

As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), India has an estimated 8.7 percent diabetic population in the age group of 20-70 years, with around 77 million Indians diagnosed with diabetes.

"Our footwear was created keeping four fundamental design goals in mind — even distribution of plantar pressure, reducing friction and shear stress, preventing external shocks, and accommodating deformities due to diabetes," explained Vidhan.

The footwear, which highlighted elements such as an anti-sweat leather covering and an effortless memory foam footbed, is priced between Rs 999 and Rs 3,999.

Approximately 500 pairs of Dr. Brinsley footwear are replaced every 25 days, distributed principally by young specialists for their middle-aged and elderly family members.

Vidhan said that his company works with small production merchants based in Karnataka, whose business was hit severely throughout the pandemic.

Vidhan was granted a stipend of 5,000 USD, directed to India. He has spent a few weeks communicating with around 200 stakeholders, including 40-odd diabetologists and sufferers.

Once he accomplished an empathic perception of the problems at hand. He then attended Civitanova Marche, a town in Italy, to analyze the shoe-manufacturing enterprise.

"I pitched upon a small, family-run business that had been in the market of diabetic footwear for over 40 years. It was there that I discovered how design purposes could be turned into a workable outcome. They only understood Italian and I didn't discourse any. We communicated through sign language and with the cooperation of passers-by," he recollected.

Coming back to India for an extra month to work on the primary models, which he acknowledges had more fashion than function. And then Vidhan returned to university.

"Some of the most comprehensive shoe-manufacturing firms are located in Boston. Another significant piece concerning living at Northeastern was that it was a stone's throw from remarkable medical establishments such as Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston Medical Center, and Harvard Medical School. I took my shoe designs to those in the manufacturing, experimented water protection and urged people to use them — all while collecting feedback and continually working on improving design, alongside education," he asserted.

The following summer, Vidhan was conferred with the Sherman Centre Entrepreneurship Engineering Co-op. This fellowship enabled him to take eight months off the institution and entirely concentrate on his venture.

"Within these two seasons, I additionally worked as an investment partner at Pillar Venture Capital and dealt with at least four deliveries per day. The expertise assisted me learn the range and extent of startups and the 'wow factor' that helps fixed an entrepreneur alone," Vidhan concluded.
