AAP ends BJP's 15-year hold on Delhi civic body, wins MCD polls

At the start of the vote-counting process at eight in the morning, the BJP appeared to be far ahead of the AAP, but soon the tide began to turn in the AAP's favour. The BJP was able to maintain its vote share, therefore there wasn't a clean victory as predicted by exit polls.

Digital Desk: After more than five hours of vote counting, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has been in opposition to the BJP for the past 15 years, was announced as the winner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) election.

In the 250-ward MCD, 133 wards have been won or are in the lead by Arvind Kejriwal's party. The BJP has won or is in the lead in 105 seats, with the Congress coming in third place with only eight seats. The simple majority score in the MCD's 250 wards is 126.

"Asli Jhaadu ab chalega," said Punjab Chief Minister and AAP leader Bhagwant Mann as his party looked set to wrest BJP's capital citadel by a thin margin. As the results started coming in, Manish Sisodia and Raghav Chhadha, two other well-known politicians, rushed to Kejriwal's home.

Following the MCD's reunification earlier this year, this was the first election held. AAP had only won 48 of the 270 municipal wards in 2017, while the Congress came in third with 30. In 2017, the BJP had won 181 of them.

The AAP office is currently celebrating with patriotic music, balloons, and flowers in line with the most recent trends. After the results, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is anticipated to address the crowd. Outside the AAP office, dhol and children wearing Kejriwal costumes are present.

On December 4, 1,349 candidates had their electoral futures determined by voting machines in the high-stakes election for the 250 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
