Digital Desk: The long-stalled talks between the Government of India and the ULFA pro-talk commenced here on Friday.
Arabinda Rajkhowa, leader of the ULFA's pro-talk side, met with senior officials from the Union Home Ministry and the Intelligence Bureau in Delhi. Sasadhar Choudhury and Raju Baruah participated in the pro-talk group.
The discussions, which began at 11 a.m., lasted several hours. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived in Delhi on Thursday and was meant to participate in the talks.
However, CM Sarma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, according to sources, are set to take part in the discussions on Saturday.
The discussions are an extension of previous interactions between the ULFA's pro-talk side and the Assam government.
The focus of the discussions between the outfit's leadership and the Centre was on political safeguards for Assamese indigenous people.
In April, the Centre sent a draft agreement to the pro-talks faction. In 2011, the outfit's leaders agreed to meet for discussions without any initial requirements.
Furthermore, it has been many years and several rounds of discussions which have already taken place between the Government of India and the pro-talk side of the ULFA shown no development till now.
Notably, the talk held by the Union Home Ministry official yesterday (18th August 2023) won't solve much of the problem, it's been expected that the centre should show the cognizance to look into the matter deeply.
According to sources in the Home Ministry, a conclusion of the talks is expected soon.
