Digital Desk: Veteran leader Sharad Pawar took back his resignation as the national president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Friday, just hours after the committee formed to choose the next president rejected Pawar's resignation and passed a resolution stating that the veteran leader should continue as party chief.  

At a press conference held on Friday, Pawar said, "I'm withdrawing my decision."

He added that his decision did not go well with the public, who reacted strongly, particularly NCP workers and office bearers.

"I announced my retirement from the NCP chief post during the publication of my autobiography. I wanted to be free of all duties after 63 years in public life. However, my choice was not well received, and a strong response was seen. People and NCP officeholders were unhappy. They requested that I rethink my choice. They begged me to do the same. Additionally, a number of political party leaders from across the state and the nation asked me to keep up the duty," Pawar said during a press conference in Mumbai today.

"Even though I am continuing in the post of President, I am of the firm belief that there must be a succession plan in place for any position or responsibility in the organization," he added.

The NCP panel met on Friday morning at the party's Mumbai office, after which party national vice-president and former Union Minister Praful Patel stated, "The committee has unanimously rejected Sharad Pawar's decision to step down as NCP national president." The NCP is strong because of Pawar. We want him to remain in this post forever."

Senior NCP leaders, including Patel, Ajit Pawar, Jayant Patil, Supriya Sule, and others, subsequently informed Pawar of the committee's decision at his 'Silver Oak' mansion.

Pawar's unexpected retirement as NCP president on Tuesday stunned many in his party and throughout the country. Pawar (82) made his decision public after the release of his revised autobiography, "Lok Majhe Sangati."

Pawar stated at the publication of his autobiography on Tuesday, "I have decided to step down as the president of the NCP." He added that he would no longer contest in elections, adding that after such a long career, one must consider retirement.
