Shashi Tharoor on Monday signed a petition by a group of young party
members seeking "constructive reforms" and met AICC president Sonia
Gandhi in this location, fueling speculation that he would run for Congress
    president.

    In the petition, which
Tharoor posted on Twitter, candidates for AICC president were asked to promise
to fully follow the Udaipur Declaration if they were elected. According to the
former Union minister, more than 650 people have already signed it.

    "I applaud this petition being
distributed by a group of young @INCIndia members, which calls for positive
changes to be made to the Party. So far, it has received more than 650
signatures. With images of the petition, Tharoor tweeted, "I am glad to
endorse it & to go beyond it."

The meeting takes place as rumours are
circulating that Tharoor, one of the 23 leaders who wrote to Gandhi in 2020
requesting an organizational revamp, may run for Congress president and submits
    his nomination.

In its declaration, Congress stressed the
importance of expanding representation for people under the age of 50 and the
enforcement of the "one person, one post" and "one family, one
ticket" rules with caveats in order to prepare the party for the upcoming
round of assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier this month, when asked about the
prospect of standing for the position of Congress president, Tharoor told PTI,
"I have just welcomed the fact that an election will be held. I think
that's excellent for the party. "Of course, it is encouraging that this
broad assertion of democratic principle has immediately resulted in a positive
response from a significant portion of the population across the nation to the
idea of my running for office. Tharoor has stated, "However, as I have
made clear, I have not declared my candidacy.

"I hope there will be a lot of
contestants to give the membership a variety of options. According to the
former Union minister, "I haven't ruled myself in or out as of yet.

Nominations for the election must be
submitted between September 24 and September 30. The deadline for withdrawing
nominations is October 8 and, if necessary, the election will take place on
October 17. On October 19, the outcomes will be released.
