The Assam Accord was signed in 1985 after a six-year-long violent anti-foreigner movement.
Digital Desk: The state government is working to identify nearly 1.66 lakh illegal immigrants according to Assam Accord guidelines and while over 30,100 undocumented people have been deported from the state territory according to Assembly records on Wednesday.
As per Implementation of Assam Accord Minister Atul Bora in his written response to Congress MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed the detection of 1,65,531 illegal immigrants residing in Assam was completed by December 31 last year, 2024.
The minister confirmed that a total of 32,870 individuals arrived in Assam between 1966 and 1971 along with 1,32,661 people who entered after 1971 according to his tally.
As per report, the Assam government has removed 30,115 illegal immigrant foreigners from Assam but failed to reveal their home countries.
The six-year anti-foreigner movement in Assam resulted in the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985. One clause within the pact demanded the detection of new immigrants to Assam after March 25 1971 followed by their electoral roll deletion and deportation efforts.
The Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma Committee has issued 67 recommendations that divide into 52 points where the state holds control according to the minister.
The government directed execution of all 52 recommendations listed in the pact. The implementation of these recommended steps has started according to him.
Regarding barbed wire fencing along the India-Bangladesh border, it is been reported that work in 228.541 km has been completed out of a total of 267.5 km of international border with the neighbouring country.
He mentioned that 171.507 km of the total border frontier lies on land and the remaining part spans 95.993 km as water territory.
