Desk: Up to 26 bridges in Guwahati that cross the Bahini River will be
demolished. Ashok Singhal, the minister for housing and urban affairs in Assam,
informed the public of this on Monday.
According to Singhal, the
bridges that are severely impeding the river and are a major contributor to the
city's artificial flooding will be destroyed.
He said the bridges would be
destroyed while taking the inconvenience of the public into consideration.
The minister later clarified
that, "As per new order, only 26 bridges instead of 89 bridges, will be
demolished which are badly obstructing the Bahini River and have become major
cause of artificial flood within Guwahati city. Earlier, the Deputy
Commissioner of Kamrup (Metropolitan) issued an order to demolish 89 bridges over
the Bahini River. Public inconvenience has been kept in notice.”
"Pursued the
list of 89 (eighty nine) nos. of bridges over the River Bahini supplied by the
Commissioner, Guwahati Municipal Corporation which are restricting the natural
flow of water causing water logging problem in various spots along the Bahini
river," the prior notice stated.
It should be noted that
"Operation Flood-Free Guwahati" was started, and eviction drives are
currently being carried out all throughout the city.
Housing and Urban Affairs
Minister Ashok Singhal had previously stated that an eviction operation would
soon be carried out in Guwahati at sites where individuals have trespassed on
property near rivers and streams.
Every time there is a
significant downpour in the city, Guwahati experiences an artificial flood and
waterlogging, which the minister blamed on the local populace.
"Many initiatives have
been made to make the city flood-free," he stated, "including
desilting of the Bahini River that flows through the southern portion of
Guwahati and Lakshmi stream."
The government also adopted
a development scheme for the Bharalu River's guard wall building.
Meanwhile, multiple eviction
campaigns are in progress, and drainage desilting has begun in various Guwahati
neighbourhoods.
